I haven't blogged in two weeks and thought I'd do a general catch-up on what we've been up to.

It's been a great year for the garden.

We canned the cucumbers we were given the other day - made two quart and two pint jars.

We gave a friend a bunch of seeds in Spring, and he just returned them in kind...

Seeds are sprouting all over the place, even ones we didn't plant.

Right before the 2" rain on Wednesday, we planted a bunch of seeds in the garden, and now they've all come up.

Everything that has ever lived or will live is a product and source of compost. It is a never ending cycle that can be very advantageous to the self-sustainable homestead.

Gardening is an enjoyable and exciting pastime that can provide you with plenty of vegetables for most of the year, without large spaces or requirements.  Most backyard gardens can sustain a small family.

Aquaponics is the practice of growing vegetables and fish together in a man-made ecosystem.  It can be much easier than it sounds and produces more food per unit of space than any other food production system.
