Solar Power on the Go!
Solar cars are making groundbreaking developments, and most of those developments are being made by backyard enthusiasts.  Check out SolarVehicles.org for an introduction into your own solar-powered vehicle.

Transport

Transportation is the hardest area for self-sustainability.  The current modern infrastructure supports gasoline and fossil-fuel powered vehicles to such an extent that most people can't see an alternative.  There are many alternatives, however, and each has its benefits for the type of travel and transportation it is designed for.

Human Powered transport is an old alternative that can provide a realistic approach to transportation.  Bicycles are the most common version of this type of transport.  Bicycles are easy to maintain and build at home, although they can have many drawbacks, including very little protection, limited speeds, limited power availability (eat your Wheaties!), and limited cargo.  Bicycles are excellent for inner-city travelers where speed and cargo are not as important.

Electric Transport has been around since the early 1900's.  The main obstacle in the development of electric transportation is the storage of the power.  Batteries are heavy, bulky, and do not contain enough storage capacity for realistic long-term traveling.   Combined with solar power, however, many people are finding that electric cars can be a reasonable alternative to gasoline or fossil-fueled vehicles. Check out what some people have created using the sun >>

Biodiesel or Vegetable-Powered Transport is a viable alternative that is most similar to the current fossil-fuel infrastructure.  Biodiesel can be made at home and is a good use of a waste product.

Wind Powered Transport - This is one of the coolest concepts I have seen in a long time.  Check it out!
